Are you uncomfortable talking about yourself? You’re not alone.
Whether you are talking about your achievements, programs, or services, the entire idea of saying something to your loyal audience shakes you to the core.
Does that resonate with you?
It sure does for me. I made this mistake myself when I launched my first online course to crickets. I held one webinar, and then never followed up.
I think I might have included one or two PS fields in emails to my list, but for the most part, I told no one about it.
There are many reasons why we all hold back from shining our light online, and a lot of it comes down to fear. Fear of being criticized. Fear of losing followers.
But all that really does is keep us in fear of going broke!
If you’re ready to face your fears, I’m debunking 6 myths below to help you overcome the fear, and embrace your inner narcissist!
1. Your Audience will Unsubscribe
“If I start talking about myself in my emails, people will be turned off and unsubscribe”.
FALSE. Most of your followers probably subscribed because you had a great opt-in, but if they stayed on their list, it’s because they like what you have to say! And, that includes talking about yourself. Your loyal listers want to know what you’re working on, have you share your failures, and shout your successes. They even want to know about your dog, and your family.
If you stop thinking about marketing as salesy, and start thinking of it as a relationship or conversation, you’ll see that they want to hear from you, about you.
2. You’ll Look Full of Yourself.
“My name is Jessica, and the world pretty much revolves around Jessica, and you can find me at JessicaAllTheTime.com.”
This could be true, if all you post is pictures of yourself, you only talk about yourself, and you turn other conversations around to be about you.
But we already know that’s not you, because you aren’t talking about yourself at all.
If you post an accomplishment, an interview you were featured in, etc. two times per week, it shows you’re successful, not full of yourself.
Look at anyone in your industry you admire, and check out their social profiles. I guarantee that they are posting behind the scenes pictures, any time they are in HuffPo or Forbes, and similar achievements.
So why can’t you do it too? You can.
3. You’ll Sound Conceited.
“I’m AHHH-MAZING!!!” (in my best Oprah impersonation, which really isn’t good at all…)
I bet that every day you wake up in wonder that you are able to run your own business, help your clients, and you wonder how you got so lucky.
That’s all it takes to not sound conceited when you’re sharing content about yourself.
If you worked on an article for weeks, and it was featured in MindBodyGreen, that is amazing! And you should feel comfortable sharing that with your audience, with, of course, a slice of humble pie.
If you’re worried about coming across as conceited for sharing your success, then just make sure you always address your gratitude, before or after. I.E.: “So honored to be featured in this month’s issue of Awesome Chicks Magazine!“, or “Excited to share this article I wrote for the NY Times. Took me weeks to perfect and I’m so grateful they published me!”
4. You’ll be Labelled a Liar
“I got 1 billion views on my website, in just one day! “
Keep it real, girlfriend. If you truly had something successful happen with your business or website, share it! But don’t go around boasting the impossible feats.
If someone does call you out on your stats, and they are true, then share the knowledge! Write a blog post, host a webinar, or create an opt-in about the techniques you used to bring that result, and share the wealth.
5. You’ll Sound Salesy.
“Buy this now, or you’ll die! Buy it today! Buy it before it’s too late!”
If you’re doing it right, you’ll still sound just like you, only successful!
You created all of your programs and services to help people, so you’re actually doing your followers a disservice if you aren’t talking about yourself, and your offerings!
There are definitely people out there who need your product, want to buy it, and want to buy it from you. So, share the solutions! Just because you’re helping someone, doesn’t mean you have to be broke doing it.
Sell with authenticity, and I promise your list size won’t drop. And, if it does, those were the people who were never going to buy from you anyway. Don’t you feel lighter!?
6. You’ll be laughed at.
“Youโre no expert! Hahahahah!” *maniacal laugh*
As a coach, you probably have some ideas or practices that are out there, or a little “woo woo”. And, some people may find them humorous, and yes, you might be laughed at.
But, lucky for you, we’ve been training for this our whole lives! If you’re blessed enough to have never been laughed at through elementary school, middle school, and high school, then maybe you’re not prepared for this type of backlash. But for the rest of us humans, I’m sure you’ve lived through worse.
Just think of it as bringing more joy to the world through laughter, and this time, it just has to be at your expense.
But, remember who you are and who you are helping, and I’m sure you will find that you can talk about yourself, and your offerings, with ease.
I think for me is not knowing where to start. I go over things in my head on how I want to say things, change it, then never follow through. I’m not too concerned if people laugh or don’t agree. We are all entitled to our own opinion right? For me, I am aware of my ability to create positive thoughts in people. I now have to commit to doing so. Maybe this was my push! : )
Thanks!
Hey Darren, thanks for sharing! It sounds like you’re struggling from perfectionist syndrome in just putting your writing down! I can definitely relate. I saw that my email today had a typo, and I internally cringed. But you know what? Part of what makes me unique from anyone else doing the same thing, or writing on the same topic, is that it’s done my way. And I’m sure whatever you produce would be authentically you, perfect or not. Because none of us are! And that will actually help others relate to you more. I do hope you use this as your push! I love that ๐
Hi Jessica,
Well I wrote my first blog! Thank you for being my motivation. It was very rewarding to hit “publish”! I guess we will see where it leads! :
Thanks again!
Darren
Congrats, Darren!
The best part about your writing style and this post, Jessica, is your ability to convey a really great message with light-heartedness and humor! Love It! Thanks. I love all your posts, or at least the ones I’ve begun to study! ๐
Thanks Carol!
